Who Stole the New Rochelle Armory Paintings?

February 24, 2010

Have you seen these paintings? Unfortunately, many of us never will. They were discovered to be missing on June 24, 2008, apparently stolen from the Armory by unknown art lovers for reasons we may never know.  Read the reprinted article from the New York Times edition of  6/6/2008. One can’t help but wonder if the outcome would have been the same if the city had carried through with the conditions stipulated by the deed requiring maintainence of the facility.  As you can see, the lack of maintenance and resolve to control the building has been documented as far back as 2004. The copy of the inspection supports the many open /broken windows. Admittedly, there may not have been money in the city’s budget to develop the building, however, the cost to seal and winterize the building would have been a small price to pay to assure the protection of this historic icon. Join the supporters who will bring this grand site back to life for a city in need of just such a place.
